Soweto Swimming School is a family owned and first privately owned Swim School in the heart of Soweto. Our vision is to bring swimming skills to children in townships, to prevent further drowning of children and to use sport as a way to encourage young kids to remain in school by broadening the accessible sporting codes to include swimming. We have built an indoor heated swimming facility which is the first of its kind in Soweto, managed by a highly qualified and professional team of instructors and leadership team. The school was founded by Tumi and Moses Masekela, both born in Soweto who are passionate about uplifting and giving back to a community that contributed to their upbringing.
We want to promote water safety and survival of both children and adults in previously disadvantaged communities. Swimming lessons are out of reach for many children in the township, we believe that an indoor swimming school with small focused classes will make our school attractive for a lot of parents. We believe this could also help us to remove many of our children from loitering in the streets.
Our philosophy is to stay close to the learners with the learners, to encourage a greater understanding of the fundamental elements of development in water. Teaching children and adults an understanding of how water relates to them through various floatation and relaxation techniques.
We want to provide affordable swimming lessons, in a fun, friendly and safe environment. This can be achieved through partnerships and sponsorship with corporates. We want to ignite the passion for swimming and someday have a team from Soweto represent South Africa in the Olympics. Our school is registered with Swim South Africa and our swim instructors have over 10 years of teaching experience.
Every year we listen to the news with endless reports stating the number of children and adults who have drowned in swimming pools and rivers purely because they lack the basic skill to survive in water. We strongly believe that our school will play a key role in providing critical skills to empower both young and old to learn how to swim and to be confident around water.
This will also ensure that we teach kids this skill from an early age at the same time providing adults with basic skills to be able to assist any child struggling in the swimming pool.
